A look back at a historic record

25 January will go down in sailing history. The crew of Sodebo Ultim 3, led by skipper Thomas Coville, broke the legendary Jules Verne Trophy record by completing their non-stop round-the-world voyage in an exceptional time of 40 days, 10 hours and 45 minutes. Behind this feat of human and technological prowess in the planet’s most hostile seas lies a key technological element: on-board energy.

A celebration at the heart of innovation

To celebrate this achievement, our teams from WILLIAMSON ELECTRONIQUE and the Sodebo team recently came together for a special joint visit. We received a warm welcome at our partner SAFT’s factory in Poitiers, the very place where the technology at the heart of this victory comes to life.

This special opportunity for discussion allowed us to gauge the real impact of on-board engineering. Indeed, to withstand extreme conditions and manage navigation systems flawlessly, the maxi-trimaran requires absolute electrical reliability.

In partnership with SAFT, the world leader in high-tech batteries, WILLIAMSON ELECTRONIQUE designed and assembled the lithium-ion batteries fitted on board the Sodebo Ultim 3.

Cutting-edge technology: the generational leap of “xec”

This high-performance battery uses Saft MP 176065 xec Li-Ion cells. Whilst the MP 176065 format is a long-standing SAFT industry standard that has been tried and tested over many years, the integration of the very latest generation of “xec” electrochemistry represents a major technological leap forward. The advantages of this new iteration are decisive for ocean racing:

  • Increased performance: The switch to xec technology offers nearly 20% more on-board energy compared to previous generations, whilst maintaining exactly the same weight and footprint. This increased energy density allows the trimaran to be made lighter, making it even more efficient without compromising the power supply to the numerous on-board systems.
  • Extreme reliability: Unfailing safety, essential when facing the extreme conditions encountered in the Southern Oceans in particular.
  • Endurance: An exceptional service life, enabling the boat to compete in races across all the world’s oceans for many years to come.

We extend our warmest congratulations to the Sodebo team on this incredible record, and thank Saft for their hospitality.
